Urban planning is a complicated process, many parties are involved, the stakes are high, and the decisions have a long lasting impact. Although several other impacts of road and railroad traffic on the environment must not be neglected, it is clear that noise annoyance is a major dissatisfier in residential areas. In many countries, therefore a system of noise limits is in force. Noise poses a multitude of health and safety concerns on such aspects as productivity, comfort, and functionality. The most common devices to mitigate noise are berms and massive fences. But I have a question. Does the planting of trees on berms reduce or improve the effectiveness of the berms? Does it matter what kind of trees are used?

I consider that planting trees on berms improves their effectiveness as means of protection of noise. Regarding the arboreal species most suitable for their use, depends on the forage and dimensions. Leafy trees could affect visibility levels, which should be considered for use on central berms (road dividers).

Well, it just seems to me that leaves are good a scattering sound, and big leaves are better at this than small leaves. However, this is exactly what you don't want on the top of a berm.
