That is, research that actively (and perhaps even intentionally) tries to improve any health domain for the researchers involved, the research participants or the research stakeholders.... do please let me know ...
I believe, health is our most precious issue in life, if we wish to live in happiness. Where is no health, there is no fulfillment. One of my goals in my country is to promote educational programs in order to rise the quality of life through science and knowledge and I'd love to make TV video interviews and share the best knowledge to our public. I am also writing books on topics like biological transformations, climate changes, designing electronic audio equipments for music... And I have some links if you wish to see how I am promoting health related issues to our public
see, for example Houeto's PhD thesis. Well, a lot of his publications are in french. But there are still articles in English, such as Malaria control among children under five in sub-Saharan Africa: the role of empowerment and parents’ participation besides the clinical strategies, 2007, in Rural and remote health
I'm looking at health citizenship, agency and participation among consumers who access private health care. Health communication and health promotion are also my key areas of focus.
Maybe this link might give you an idea about my health research involvement... Biotransformations Controlled by the Mind, http://ijes.info/1/2/4254121.pdf and soon will be available a full volume one book in this topic. Details here http://youtu.be/WFlyITPk0Kc
My PhD dissertation was on comparative analysis of health promotion activities in urban and rural secondary schools in Cross River State. The results helped to highlight what secondary schools do to improve their health.
How can a reflection and behaviour change assignment in a course on health promotion influence the health of postsecondary students? My colleagues and I completed a qualitative study and outlined a reflection process used in a course on health promotion for Addiction counselling students in a western Canadian university. You may find this of interest. We wanted to answer this question of pedagogy as well as the impact for future practice.
The solution to this question, to me, lies with Participatory Action Research. Its approach umbrellas under critical social theory and looks to support positive 'wholesale' organisational/community health capacity and reform. Its desirable components include participation, empowerment and emancipation - at the organisational, participant and researcher level. . I have attached two articles of mine and my colleagues that may illuminate further - one conceptual and the other as a PAR project in action
I'm interested in participatory action research and health promoting universities. Has anyone combined health promotion education, with a focus on improving the health of university students through PAR?
Sharon - without undergoing a personal search - I would suggest that you would be hard pressed to find many examples. PAR-based studies in health promotion, despite their natural synergy with the discipline, are relatively uncommon. Add to that the fact that the HPU setting is one of the least visible in the WHO's settings-based portfolio. That said, there are certainly broader examples of HPU activity (particulalrly in Health Promotion International). I shall pop a couple of articles of mine below that may assist - just from the reference lists - although the HPU-specific article is a little dated now. They both relate to nurisng - but they can be read generally too. A few other tips that might assist. 1. The US literature tends to use the term Colleges instead of universities - so that might be worth chasing up. 2. In contrast to the dearth of HPU literature - one of the most visible settings is the Health-Promoting School. Not quite the same - but obvious contextual links between them. Mark Dooris has written several conceptual articles related to HPU that you may also find useful
