Have you already made decision on which domain of renewable energy you want to work on: generation, control, or something else?
A subject that is always recent is social acceptance of RES, maybe a survey on your area on applicability. Also consider the biomass area.
Advantages of decentralized energy systems.
Energy security and independence by using renewable energy.
Microgrid applications.
Harmonize energy demand and supply on both sides (e.g. using energy when it is available).
Transportation of solar power without supplying it via the grid (instead of transporting electricity, operating high energy need businesses - e.g. aluminium production, some petrochemical process - in the area where the renewable energy is abundant).
I am open to any domain. My biggest dilemma is the availability of data.
I would prefer to stay away from the social aspect as it requires ethical clearance which is timely process
