Is it possible to adopt comparisons and approaches to satellite imagery and maps to determine the areas of the marshes of southern Iraq over the past 100 years and how?
I do not know the specifics of S Iraq. Wetlands can leave various signatures that may be picked up by satellite imagery, or high resolution aerial photos (infrared seem to be best). Even more detail can be obtained with LiDAR if there have been drainage and farming efforts and water modifications through time. If you have soil maps at identify presence of hydric soils, vegetation surveys identifying hydrophytic plants or tree types, added information might be applied. When using remote sensing, some degree in ground truthing or verification will probably be needed. If interested in LiDAR, I coauthored a couple of papers 2007, 2015 that might be interesting. When I get into computer, I will try to send a digital copy of Cowardin et al, on classification of wetland and deep water habitats and used to classify aerial photos or satellite images, with ground verification.
