Considering Disruptive Innovation as a subset of Innovation with radical characteristics on Market dimension, how would one can define the phenomenon of Disruption at individual level? Or to say Disruptive output of an individual? Comments and thoughts are welcomed.
Disruptive behaviour is generally measured in terms of acceptance and making the intervention a way of life. Thus output of an innovation can be measured in these terms as well.
Francis Darwin (1848–1925), the son of Charles Darwin (and a botanist too), said that "In science, the credit goes to the man who convinces the world, not to whom the idea first occurs." With "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions" (1962), Thomas Kuhn (1922–1996) later introduced the term "paradigm shift"—which has become an English-language idiom—to refute claims concerning the linear progress of scientific knowledge: contrariwise, he showed that fields undergo periodic changes that open up approaches to understanding what scientists would never have considered valid before. Clayton Christiansen, who coined the term "disruptive innovation" almost 20 years ago, drew from Kuhn's work. He recognized that disruptive innovations tend to be produced by outsiders: the business environment of market leaders does not allow them to pursue a disruption when it first arises because disruptions are not profitable enough at first and because their development takes scarce resources away from sustaining innovations (which are needed to compete against current competition). So, a disruptive process can take a while to develop (even if once it is deployed it achieves a much faster penetration and higher degree of impact on established markets). Linking the three references to address this question, one might say that a "disruptive individual" (or his/her "disruptive outputs") will only gain recognition if he/she convinces the world (which supports the response made by @Harekrishna Misra) and that his/her outputs will only be recognized as truly "disruptive" if they lead to paradigm shift. One might hazard to say also, still following Clayton Christiansen, that "networking" may be the way for the "disruptive individuals" to facilitate the interaction of this with that, which might lead to something else entirely new. In "The Innovator's DNA: Mastering the Five Skills of Disruptive Innovators" (2011), Christiansen identified networking as one of the five discovery skills that distinguish innovative entrepreneurs and executives from ordinary managers (The others are associating, questioning, observing, and experimenting.)
