I agree with Han. Due to the move towards flexible learning, students would not attend a lot of F2F sessions except in the case of labs, where hands-on experience is needed. The attached article highlights the trends and issues for the latter that helps to inform why universities would have more flexible learning in their programmes:

How will universities look like in the future?

In my personal opinion, future universities can be operated in a highly automated mode i.e. less & less human resource to man the university.  Virtual lectures / lectures can be delivered virtually 24 x 7 through learning management systems.  Virtual reality & augmented reality become more prevalent way of students' learning.  Usage of class rooms / meeting rooms are based on on-demand-request via outsourced 3rd party facilities providers etc.  Exam can be taken online with possibility of open book exam for some subjects.  Certificate awarded will be in soft-copy emailed to you instead of hard-copy.  In fact some of the above sharing is already being implemented.

You are raising an interesting question.

As I see it, in the future, universities and colleges will be very different from what they are now. First, they will be more international. More than ever, we live in a global world. As a result any good, say, educational institution will receive students from many countries all over the world. Second, I guess that English will still be a more international language than what is now the case. I wonder whether this change will have beneficial or detrimental effects to higher education.  Third, as you suggested, year  by year technology will pervade universities, colleges, and schools of any type. Fourth, the so called augmented reality will become, as it were, real reality. Fifth, as universities and colleges will become more international, it is feasible that the two-semester system is replaced by the one year system. Note that because of the above mentioned internationalization, it could be likely  that many students would not have money enough to go their countries once a semester finishes and get back once the second semester begins

 All of this reminds me of philosopher Socrates while saying that he was neither Greek, nor from Athens, but a citizen of the world.    

A world with logic would be incoherent and illogical; a world without morality would be  unjust and immoral; a world without beauty would be aberrant and ugly. As the true, the good, and the beautiful are universal categories, regardless of they are seen at different places, all of us should do our best to have educational institutions that paid due attention to these categories.

I guess that with the passages of time educational institutions will be attentive to the true, in first place; to the good, in second place. Aesthetical issues will tend to be ignored.

In this vein, it should be noted that philosopher Kant wrote three Critiques. The Critique of Pure Reason which is devoted to the true; The Critique of Practical Reason which is dedicated to the good; and the Critique of Judgment which is dedicated to beautiful. The Critique of Pure Reason was,say, studied scientifically by the famous psychologist Jean Piaget; The Critique of Practical Reason lies at the heart of Lawrence Kohlberg' s well-known theory of moral development. I know of no psychologist who had taken seriously into account Kant's Critique of Judgment.

 If, in a near, or even relatively distant future, higher education pay due attention to these categories, then we will have a much better world than that one wherein we live. In fact if we look around what is more apparent is poverty, social exclusion, criminality, war and the like. Future higher education has a moral obligation to put an end to this  sad reality and to give rise to a world wherein, say, the force of reason triumphs over the reason or power of force in  any state of affairs. When this were the case, it is likely that we live in harmony with ourselves, the others, and the universe. The more future higher education aims at attaining this harmony, the  mores it deserves to be called higher education. Note also that for one  to get higher education one has to follow a demanding track not  a shortcut. It is alleged that Alexander, the Great, King of Macedonia, once asked his tutor,  the Greek geometer Manaechmus, to teach him a shortcut to master of Geometry. It is also alleged that Manaechums  replied the following: Oh King! To travel through your country there are  royal roads and  roads for ordinary people. In geometry there is only one road , and this difficult road is the same  for all.

I foresee a scenario where Universities would not be limited by walls; where teaching and research would require not just humans but also robots,  (encompassing all avenues for the dissemination of knowledge). Students may also be free to send robots to recieve lectures on their behalf. The possibilities are limitless.

By 2030, I think much of the traditional university system that we know now will still be in existence.

we have great placement on the issue. In my opinion, everything goes to the internationalization of higher education institutions, with interaction between students and teachers. On the other hand, it takes a look difereniado regarding excessive virtualization these interactions. After all, even with all the technology, we are still human and nothing can replace personal contact, something like eye to eye!
