We can think of language in multiple ways for purposes of analysis: for example, Will our study focus on spoken, written or performed language?
Also in my recent teaching and research I wonder about:

2. aspect of language
3. syntax
4. intonation
5. phonology
6. physics of speech
7. child language
8. language formation
9. mood+modality

That is an interesting question. So far we are focusing on written genres and further on we can look at spoken language features.

The spoken features are most interesting as we see language unfolding face to face...Deborah Tannen had recorded conversations by the dinner table to analyse spoken English as per transcription. But currently we can pick actual stuff from YouTube and the contextual features include bodily gesture and third party audience. The profile is very rich to study indeed.
Not only does spoken language occur immediately, but also it has an ephemeral aspect, Once enunciated it is over in its original form. Additionally in many cultures spoken languages combine with gesture and facial expression. A key element may be how to capture meaning and understanding in a brief moment in the multiplicity of factors that comprise the spoken word. A daunting task!
Is the English "to be" identical in every sense to Spanish "ser?"
