I am struggling with determination free quartz and quartz in glass phase in stoneware body. The variation of free quartz causes planarity issues due to CTE. If we have only XRF and method to charaterize ceramic properties (Macro-scale). How could we equip our testing procedure for this propose?
2 options: XRD or dilatometry.

We have only XRF but I knew that there is some technique to interpret data from XRF to XRD. Also, dilatometer is lack of repeatability.
Raman spectroscopy is very sensitive to crystalline quartz. Scanning a polished section of the ceramic under a Raman microscope would indicate the presence of any quartz crystallites larger than the laser spot.
Thank you for your advice. I may need to consult with other institutions to ask for analyse if I need to use Raman as well as XRD.
Afterthought - in practice, instances of crystalline quartz smaller than the laser spot (conventionally in the range 1 to 5 micron diameter) would still be seen as a sharp peak superimposed on the glass spectrum at 465 cm-1. Absence of a clear peak would suggest absence of free quartz.
