The suspended load is the amount of surface and channel erosion that is delivered to the site. Some erosion is retained and not delivered. One way to estimate erosion delivered, is the correlate the sediment load with streamflow rate, and you might want to separate sediment samples taken during rising limb of hydrograph and falling limb. Since the sediment loading rate is typically highly variable as flow rates change, a substantial amount of sampling may be needed. You might also divide by the estimate of the SDR for the river catchment size, so if the SDR for the specific river was 15%, you divide the total loading estimate for the year by 0.15 to get total estimated erosion. Don’t expect high accuracy/precision, more of an indicator.

Ok, if you have the sediment rating curve (ie, sediment concentration vs discharge flow rate), you can take that times the discharge rate through time. So in Excel spreadsheet, each flow value throughout the year is taken times the sediment concentration derived from the equation. I may have an old spreadsheet that displays this, but will have to respond later. I think I also have a poster that displays this approach. Sometimes sediment concentrations are highest during the rising limb of the hydrograph, so some adjustment could be made for that if there is sufficient data. Adjustments may also be needed for storm flush after dry period, or substantial changes in disturbance such as major flood, land use or watershed conditions such as severe wildfire.

so basically take flow in liters per second x estimated concentration from sediment rating in mg/l times the number of seconds at that specific flow rate, and do that for a given flow time time period from your stream gauging station and calculate for period desired such as each water year. You can make the unit conversions that best suit your needs. This is sediment yield, so you can divide that by your stream watershed area.

This approach can also be used to estimate nutrient yields or other estimates of nutrient cycling and loading where a good concentration flow rating curve has been found at stream gauging stations.

Dave Rosgen also has a book on sediment rating estimates where he normalizes sediment and flow readings to bankfull flow and bankfull sediment concentration. You might be interested in his book available at www.wildlandhydrology.com.

This process is fairly simple if you have the detailed data that is needed. Otherwise, its not simple and that is why erosion models are sometimes used.

If you have all the data (pedology, geology, precipitation, land use, hydrometric data), you can use the SWAT model.

According to your question, you don't want to use the models (RUSLE, WEPP, SWAT..), so:
