A running title is a good practice. For specific journals, it appears on every page of the paper at the top of the page, for the convenience of the reader. Thus any page that is photocopied will be self documenting and traceable.
A running title is not allowed to flow onto more than one line, so it has to be extremely brief.
You can simply make it from the first five words of the full title of your paper, if that makes sense. (It should suggest the full title, so: "A Preliminary Study to Research" is meaningless.)
Better still, you can craft your running title by omitting inessential words from your title, even if the result is ungrammatical.
For example, the title of my E-Textbook is "How to do Research: Today's Tips and Tools".
My running title would be "How to do Research Today" or "Research: Today's Tips Tools", either of which will let someone Google it.

Some journals or style guides require papers to have a running head. The running head is a shortened form of the title of your paper that appears at the top left of each page of your manuscript. It helps to identify the pages of your paper and keep them together. In APA style, the running head is placed in the upper left. So when your paper is accepted for publication, this short title will appear at the top of each odd-numbered page.
