If I understand your question correctly, my suggestion would be to draw a draft mind map of your literature review research area, create a small post-it note for each of your references (author, year and brief description) then try to attach the notes to the map in the most appropriate places. This is a dynamic process for improving your conceptual view of your research area and evaluating how well it is covered by your current literature.
