Many specialist societies present ‘best poster’ prizes, yet without generally agreed assessment methods. Posters are used widely at medical meetings to present a concise overview of clinical and scientific research, and generally provide a more relaxed environment for exchanging ideas than the crowded auditorium.
Quick scores inevitably reflected posters' presentational qualities rather than scientific merit. An unattractive poster with high scientific merit risked being overlooked on first impression. However, a prize-winning poster should show both presentational and scientific excellence.

Poster presentation is communication of research effectively and precisely and
comprises of evaluating information, analyzing it and demonstrating the findings in a creative manner.
The three components are Content, Design of the poster (layout,spacing, font, color and appropriate graphics) and Presentation skills. If the content is good, design is appealing and presented in a clear manner the poster can win an award.
Content: It should have a title which captures the main idea.The topic selected should evoke interest in the reader/audience. The authors are listed generally below the title. The background, aim & objectives, methods, results should be presented precisely.
The presentation should be crisp and concise...the title should convey the crux of the paper and figures should be appealing and informative
It's not unlike science fairs and trying to entice a book editor, really. I recommend sticking to the association's rules and using standard font. Less is more. If the content is great, it will be obvious. Good luck.

Different poster presentation competitions may have different assessment criteria. Presenters are encouraged to request and read through the criteria if available. The assessment criteria for the poster presentation competition of the professional association (International Association for Dental Research, Australian & New Zealand Division) that I judge for are: 30% scientific merit, 40% oral presentation, and 30% questions & answers (Q&A). The scientific merit is assessed according to the strength of research (novelty, contribution to science and health, research methods used, level of project completion, etc.). The oral presentation is evaluated based on the 3-5 minutes' brief presentation given by each contestant and the judges focus on how clear the research message is made in the presentation, good presentation skills (eye contact, gestures, tones, confidence, etc.) and time management. The Q&A component is assessed based on the presenter's answers to the judges' questions. We would like to know the presenter's involvement level and understanding of her/his research topic, as well as the challenge, alternative methods, potential value and future indications of the research.
According to my experiences, most presenters did not differ too much in the scores of the oral presentation component because the presentation could be prepared and practiced in advance and most presenters have done so already. The scientific merit and Q&A are the key components that differentiate the presenters significantly. It's quite often to see some presenters being not familiar with the sampling methods, lab experiments, clinical procedures or statistic methods they used. They could not explain the reasons why the specific methods or procedures were selected and used by them. Some poster presentations showed no novalty at all, since the researchers just duplicated and repeated the methods of the projects that have been published by other people. Further, some researchers only presented the percentages of the data and made an inference directly based on the percentages. This shows a poor understanding of research methods and statistic analysis; consequently those presenters did not win the poster presentation competition.
In summary, the tips for winning a poster presentation award include: (1) a research topic or research method that has not been fully presented or published by other people, (2) a good study design with appropriate research methods that can lead to an impactful scientific inference, (3) a thorough understanding of the research methods and results of your project, and (4) having several rehearsals before presenting in a poster competition.

I think, a scientific poster should have less description and more diagrammatic. For a award winning poster, you will have to pay attention not only to the topic of the discussion but also the originality and the presentation of a poster.
For a reference, you can make some charts, collage photos (no copyright issue) etc.
