Actually in smectic A the layer spacing is equal to molecular length of the LC molecule, if the spacing is less than that we can give smectic X which is due to tilting of the molecule. At this case no problem to distinguish.

Some time times even the spacing is greater than molecular length of the molecule, which is due to to the interdigitation of the molecules in smectic layers. At this cases either molecule tilted or not we dont get idea from layer spacing values at this case how to we can find molecule orientation which directly questioning the smectic A, B and C of the LC molecules.
