I've encountered a problem recently. After the cation-exchange process, the surface area of my sample dropped sharply. I guess it is because that the unexchanged cations blocked the pores of the zeolite. So is there a process I can use to wash the sample more efficiently? Thanks.
Wash the ion exchanged zeolite with de-ionized water, filter and dry. Remove any un-complexed metal ions present in the zeolites, that is probably blocking the pores, by treating the ion exchanged zeolite with aq. 0.01M NaCl, filtered, washed with deionied water and dried at 60*C in a vacuum oven.
You need to mention type of zeolite, exchanged ion and way of surface area measurement to answer your problem.
Some times extended backwash with less than 0.05M sodium chloride may remove fine particles which are abstructing the openings.
