We are testing crude extracts taken from various parts of taro and comparing their efficiency against PCa carcinogenesis. We've notice similar studies used Student T-test in measuring the efficacy of the active compounds in mitigating carcinogenesis. We would like to know why is Student T-test is being used and how to utilize it.
I may not be an expert, but I want to give you some advice to help you obtain good answers.
You should describe the number of cases and research design to certain extent.
It is vital to to know the characteristics of data to select the statistical procedures.
(e.g. Number of case, paired or unpaired, and normality of the data.)
Do you evaluate the efficacy by comparing the control group with intervention group, or by comparing before-intervention with after-intervention?
When comparing continuous variable between two groups, Paired t test, Student-t test, Mann whitney u test (Wilcoxon rank sum test ), or Wilcoxon signed-rank test should be appropriately used, according to normality (parametric or non-parametric) and paired/unpaired. Number of cases is also an important factor.
If the groups are more than three, you should also add some post hoc analysis.
