One of the challenges associated with the conduct of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and Strategic Environmental Assessments (SEAs) is that it can be difficult to specify the impacts of proposed developments on biodiversity, be this at the level of a particular species or at that of the ecosystem. The Red Listing process was articulated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature to assess changes in the degree of threats to a species based on such criteria as population size and geographic range. The Red Listing process can be used in EIAs and SEAs to determine the extent to which key endangered species might be impacted by a proposal and therefore also to modify the said proposal.
