You can melt the salt and pour at the back of the panel. There won't be any issue.

my panel's depth is 18 mm and I want to fill it with almost 10-12 mm of melted salt. How much free space top of the melted salt I need to due to the thermal expansion?

Hi Mohammad,

Whilst a good idea for PCM application you need to make sure you mitigate phase separation issues associated with salt-based PCM solution. Assuming your solar panel angel is say 35deg you could have issues over the course of repeated freeze/melt cycles at which point your PCM will fail.

Engineering rule of thumb for PCM expansion would be to fill with liquid until there is approx. 10% air gap. This gives plenty of room for any expansion that may occur.

Yeah Salt based PCMs have advantages and drawbacks as well. but I think the advantages have more power than the drawbacks.

@ Mohammad - It depends on the nature of the salt. In general, organic PCMs require more space to accommodate for thermal expansion (10-15 %) than the inorganic PCMs (5-10 %).
