Break down the topic and talk about the different literary sources that would contribute to a piece of work. /Explain primary sourcing and secondary and speak about the topic they are choosing to review and how the literature they gather should relevantly back up the arguments they are making in their thesis. Literature review also allows the research to agree or disagree with the journals found once they do their own body of research through interviews, focus groups, open and closed questioning and observations. The literary review is what other people have said about the topic you are researching what their thought are on the work and your literary review will either support their findings or blow their idea out of the water if you come up with a different angle in your piece of work. Try to find literature that is relevant and use of good search engines is a must. The students need to understand all of the above or they will struggle to present a research piece worthy of a high mark and the end result will be disappointing. The literary review material may agree with your findings, it may give you a new angle to look at the subject matter and it may even give your research that new direction that makes it stand out from the rest. The importance or most important part of the literary review is deciding how much is too much when gathering literature on your subject matter a few strong journals can say more that a load of weak arguments made by a broad group of researchers. Remind them this is their piece of work and it how they choose to interpret what the find in the literature review that will really matter at the end of the day.
I totally concur with Mr Gonzales you need to dip you toe into the process of research to fully embrace it. As he says give them topics to research or a list from which they can pick an area that appeals to them and ask them to research and find literature relevant to the area or topic of interest and this will allow them to better appreciate the process. My ideas are based on my own personal experience of being taught research the first occasion I carried out a mini research essay covering all the core skills a good researcher need to develop. Each person selected an area of interest and carried out a literary review, a discussion of the research methods then they developed a short qualitative interview where open ended questions were used to get another perspective on the topic and the findings were discussed and compared to that of other researchers and similarities were analysed and new angles discussed. Then the conclusion allowed the writer develop and introduce other their own ideas of what other research could be done in that area. What the found out from reading and analysing had they any ideas for more research on the topic that would improve it or take the researcher of in a new direction where they could develop their own argument or discussion for or against the finding in their piece of work.
