I have a child who is seven years old. He is diagnosed with autism level three. Most of the barriers for him since birth have been hypersensitivity to noises. He is not particularly upset by the loudness necessarily, more of the type of noises. One of the noises that really irritates him to the point of biting, throwing, breaking and demanding to hear more of it is when he hears a truck that is "loud". This is any car noise passing by that either is revving their engine or stepping on the gas. Right now he has a pair of Bose active noise cancelling earmuffs and he listens to fan noises in them. That is the best solution we have found for him to be more comfortable outside. As a parent, I have to constantly check myself because when he demands to hear more of something he clearly does not want, it is a trigger for me. I started with KU earlier this year to work on furthering my education in autism studies. I have learned some really good evidence based practices, but am curious as to what your input is specifically about helping him be able to regulate himself better and interventions that can support hyper sensitivity to noises? Thank you for your time.
