Most core/shell structured quantum dots (e.g. CdSe/CdZnS) today employ oleic acids as the passivating ligands. But can they be easily substituted for other types of organic ligands? Is there any simple methods that can be carried out on commercially available quantum dot solutions?
There are many methods to exchange the oleic acid ligands with other ligands. What is your final goal though? Are you trying to make the QDs water soluble? Do you have an exchange ligand in mind?
I totally agree with Dr Sebastian Requena answer.. Oleic acid and oleylamine are the long chain carboxylic acid and amine functional groups and hence it should be removed for the optoelectronic applications in order to enhance the carrier transport.. For this usually ligand exchange is carried out in aqueous or non-aqueous medium.. The ligand exchange of nanoparticles depend on the specific application requirement... Usually 1-dodecanethiol is employed for the ligand exchange of water soluble thiol ligands to non-aqueous medium and for the organic soluble nanoparticles, mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) is recommended for the ligand exchange in order to transfer to the aqueous medium.. But as already mentioned.. it depends on your requirement..
