In my city (Bihać, BiH) is a migrant crisis. There are 10 000 people in the city. Residents are trying to help but that's not enough. How to solve this big problem, especially when winter comes!?
There have been an increasing literature on temporary cities. While this provides a temporary solution, it can be argued that it is a catalyst for social segregation. Policy needs to be inclusive and dimensions of culture must be enforced in urban areas prone to attract migration. Diversity in culture must be sought.
Please note that migration is not new. Port Cities have for long been the terrain on which migration used to occur.
Question: are we talk about humanitarian crisis of overpopulated city which is temporary and this is problem of this moment or about migrant crisis (problem) which is much more complicated subject and every country will have diferents situations and experiences. Please define problematic area, from answers, I quess this is necesary.
I pointed out that it was the town of Bihac (which is a small town in the northwest of Bosnia). There are currently 10,000 migrants. Domestic population is humane but at the same time endangered.
I do research work, and within the project "Language School - Migrant Education in the USK-a." (https://www.researchgate.net/project/School-of-languages-Education-of-migrants-in-the-Una-Sana-Canton) so I'm looking for similar experiences, or some ideas that would help me conclude my work.
I see that Bihac hosts a population of 61,000. that means 1/6 of the population are migrants. This is an unsually high number.
From a policy perspective, I would tend to look at its from two levels:
1. We need economic integration to allow the migrating population to be financially independent; and thus, not draining local resources. The Economic dimension will be interesting to explore, as an increasing population will mean increasing demand and supply, which means that there will be some businesses that will inevitably gain from this.
2. Social integration to ensure decent liveability standards. Also related to diversity in culture, language, etc...
10,000 migrants for 80,000 inhabitans is a lot and for sure city is not handle such number of new people, so the quality of Your life (as inhabitans) is reduced. So even humanitarian society will be finally tired and it will start conflicts.
As I check in map You are next to boundary of EU. I am living in city in east region of Poland, but on the other site of boundary. I had the friend, who works with migrant families (as You with children). The problem was that this place was't their destiantion. They appear and very often escapes from refugee centers to families in other parts of EU (most cases Germany). So learning them polish language wasn't targeted. I read the book about polish migrants through II War World, so there are different migrants and different phases of "migration needs", from primary level of needs, safety place, food, roof until come back to normal aspiration of every man (acording to cultural diferences). It could be interesting get involved psychologist and theirs observation, checking results in beginning and in some evaluation phases when You cooperate with children.
Migration is an interesting topic. I'd like to explore the the view of temporary cities and how rural to urban influx of poor communities contribute to slum formation and expansion. We can talk about a potential collaboration :)
It is quite interesting what Mr Zaherr Allam wrote. I thought more about the future migration as consequences of climate changes and if in the spatial planning and diferent policies we have tools to react for, in my opinion, soon growing problem. Nowadays temporary cities or slums can be appear in the places where we don't predict them today. So in my case I am more interested from spatial planning and logistic sites (like we now in Bihac). The experiences with social and psychological site of process can be interesting researches.
And also for Mrs Šeherzada Džafić I found adresses of organization taking care of the migrants in Poland, I think similar field that Your project, so from social site: http://miedzykulturowa.org.pl/ ; and all organization work in Poland http://www.forummigracyjne.org/pl/aktualnosci.php?news=356&wid=32 Maybe it will be useful in find more specific solutions, experiences and maybe some possibilities in the cooperation. As I know this is important point in receives of the funds for such projects. If You need some help I can search more or contact with them.
In our country Turkey, you may know that we have been dealing with Syrian migration crisis. The problems may occur in various reasons. Some of them are economic, and some of them are about sociological such as terror or war problems.
You know better the conditions in your country in 1990's.
I think the peace agreements and healthy life conditions in every field of life (Economy, labor, education, health, etc.) are the solutions.
I have worked in Ankara as volunteer in an international project called "Youth gives hand to small Syrian immigrants" working on creation of teaching curriculum for small Syrian immigrants there. We came from all over Europe to share our experience in teaching and the success was great. I am so grateful to my friends and colleagues from Bayazit University of Ankara leading the project, especially Dr. Demet Soylu and Dr. Tunc Medeni.
I'm try help with project „School of languages - Education of migrants in the Una-Sana Canton“.
In addition to the English and Bosnian language courses, children would have the opportunity to attend workshops where they would develop their creativity and learn about the intercultural context of today's global society. Thus the main objective of the project – knowledge of the basics of Bosnian and English, education about interculturality and the sense of belonging to the community in which they are currently located.
People Mostly Fled their Countries due to Destruction of Wars, Terrorism, Bad Economy, Un Employment Others. Governments and United Nations could solve the above mentioned problems 90 percent Migration Crises would be solved. Honestly they make profit out of wars and Migration. Regards
I think that is true. Our govermment make profit of this migration. I see them traying to help this people (immigrants) and asking for help (money) but also saying that migration is a disaster for our city and that it needs to stop.
