I need to size an inertial tank containing water at 15 degrees Celsius. The tank will be connected to an upstream chiller with a cooling capacity of 63 kW. Outflow from the tank will have a maximum flow rate of 12 m3/h at a temperature of 15 degrees, and the return will have a temperature of around 40 degrees. I wonder how to size the tank so that the return water does not raise the temperature by 3/4 degrees.
The heat capacity of water is 4180 J/(kg·K) or 1.16 Wh/(kg·K) or 1.16 kWh/(m³·K). The tank will be heated with a power of (40-15)·12·1.16=348 kW, and cooled with 63 kW. Therefore, at any volume, the tank will be heated with 285 kW and raise its temperature anyway. To raise by less than 0.75 K/h, it should have a volume of 285/1.16/0.75 = 328 m³!
To maintain its température constant, it can have any volume but be cooled by a 348 kW chiller.
