+3 years aprox. to become lecturer, after doing some research/publications as assistant
+3/4 years to earn a full-time position as a lecturer, if you get a teaching qualification and have good publications
+8 years on average to reach senior lecturer, if managed successfully teaching, research/publications and consulting.
+8/10 final more years to aspire to turn full-professor, if you show enough endurance and research excellence
All this is part of life. In some professional courses such as Engineering and Technology, one may earn a Ph.D. from a reputed institute and join as an Assistant Professor. After 5 years, one may become an Associate Professor and after that one may become a Full Professor. In some countries, it takes 10 years teaching and research experience after Assistant Professor to become Full Professor. One needs to concentrate on qualitative research work.
K-12 (12 years); + B.Tech (4 years), M.Tech. (2 years); + Ph.D. (4 years)+ 10 years (Assistant Prof + Associate Prof) == Professor (if one is lucky).
However, for a true academician, these designations do not matter much. They are just part of life. A good researcher is likely to be recognized in the world irrespective of his/her designation.
