Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are synthetic receptors that mimic the behavior of natural bioreceptors. Their operation is based on the principle of molecular imprinting. This is based on the co-polymerization of functional monomers and their cross-linking agent around the target molecule. The functional monomer(s), the cross-linking agent and the polymerization technique used are chosen and optimized according to the target molecule, in order to obtain the best selectivity, the maximum absorption capacity and physicochemical properties adapted to the envisaged application.

Moreover, carbon nanomaterials have played a central role in the development of nanobiosensors. This is due to the unique properties they can provide such as excellent electrical conductivity, high mechanical strength, good thermal conductivity etc. Examples include nanotubes (1D), graphene sheets (2D) or nanodiamonds (0D). However, there is a growing interest in the use of transition metal dichalcogenides for the realization of biosensors, taking advantage of the large surface area, fluorescence, electrical conductivity and fast heterogeneous electron transfer that they offer.

Finally, natural polymers have a good biocompatibility and can be interesting for the realization of biosensors.
