I am currently researching growth media, but cannot find a suitable resource detailing how to choose which media to use. For example a general growth media such as R2A: what microorganisms grow best on it? When do you use it instead of TSB?
Do you look at the composition of the growth media and work out what is suitable or is there a selection guide available somewhere?
Any direction to some resources would be appreciated.

For selecting a growth media firstly you should select a media as a basic media, after that you can change its composition for increasing growth but C:N ratio should be accurate .

What do you want to cultivate?
The culture medium is usually chosen based on the type of organism you want to grow, e.g. filamentous fungi, strictly anaerobic bacteria, lactic acid bacteria, etc.; check a classical source such as the DIFCO manual, or go directly to a manufacturer site such as BD.com to see culture media with its intended use.
If you are uncertain of the right medium but know what specific genus you are after, search for that same microorganism in culture banks and check what is recommended, it may be a good start.

Thank you for your response. I have completed my experiments using R2A agar to get a broad culture in a water sample for testing, but I cant seem to find literature to justify my use of R2A agar. Among other things I want to find out what microorganisms will fail to grow in this medium, what microorganisms growth is slowed etc.
