Here, I used thionyl chloride for chlorination of polymer conjugate, now I want to remove thionyl chloride from my product. Can anybody suggest me how to remove thionyl chloride and also if there is any procedure other than rotavap. Thank You!!
To remove thionyl chloride from a polymer conjugate, methods include distillation under reduced pressure, co-distillation with solvents like toluene, and purification techniques like chromatography. These methods help eliminate excess SOCl₂ and its byproducts, ensuring a clean final product.
Dear Amisha Murmu, SOCl2 can't be removed by direct evaporation, rather by help of a non-solvent. The procedure is as follow: concentrate the solution, then add 3-4 times of an innert non-solvent (one of: CH4, toluene, benzere), and reevaporate again under reduced pressure with a temperature not exceeding 40°C. This procedure may be repeated twice to ensure deep purification. My Regards
For small molecules we often work up a thionyl chloride reaction by quenching into HCl / ice water, then extracting (if liquid) or filtering (if solid) immediately. we sometimes run a vacuum distillation.
since your product is a polymer, you might be able to dissolve in a solvent then precipitate into a non solvent and filter - the Thionyl chloride may stay dissolved or may be quenched (if non solvent is water or an alcohol). But if the polymer precipitates it can be rapidly isolated from the mixture.
