I am seeking for chemical methods to remove sulfate ion from a brackish water. Salinity is about 15 g/L and sulfate concentration is 3 g/L. I wish to reduce sulfate to 0.8-1 g/L, with no marked effects on Na, Cl, Mg, K, Ca concentrations.
Any recommendations?
Reducing sulfate ion concentration in brackish water while preserving the concentrations of other ions can be a lot more challenging but achievable. You can try the following method:
Precipitation with Barium Chloride (BaCl2): You can add barium chloride to the brackish water. Ba2+ ions will react with sulfate ions to form insoluble barium sulfate (BaSO4) precipitate. Ensure that you add the exact amount needed to reach your target sulfate concentration and then remove the resulting solid precipitate.
