I am conducting an experiment for my dissertation. The manipulation I used consisted in asking people to recall and write down a particular episode in which they felt they had or had not control over a situation, depending on whether they were assigned to the experimental or control group.
Now, I need to run a manipulation check. I have two manipulation check items, based on a 7-point Likert scale. The only way I know to recode text variable is SPSS automatic recode feature, but it is not what I need to do this time, so I am a bit lost.
Could any of you give me a hint? You would save my life!

Can you say more about the statistical analysis that you want to do? In particular, it seems like you would need to compare your Likert-scored variables to something else in order to perform a manipulation check.
