Dear colleague in ResearchGate
I am seeking an advice on how to read and obtain gridded CMORPH precipitation data. Most of the time, the data was in unfamiliar format that i currently use (i.e., GeoTIFF, .hdf, ascii, etc).
The detail specification is a high resolution 8km precipitation data at daily temporal scale.
Your opinion is highly appreciated.

Hi!
I'm not familiar with geotiff, but you can read the others formats (hdf, ascii, netcdf) using Grads (http://iges.org/grads/), NCL (http://www.ncl.ucar.edu/), MATLAB and IDL (http://kiwi.atmos.colostate.edu/rr/tidbits/pdf/idl-meteo-intro.pdf). This are some examples.

You can have ascii files at http://iridl.ldeo.columbia.edu/SOURCES/.NOAA/.NCEP/.CPC/.CMORPH/.3-hourly/ but it gives you huge files and as suggested above, it is better to open a netcdf files with Grads (which is free) or matlab.

Quite convenient to use GrADS to plot figures or write into a output file.

As Vincent Moron indicates, you can get the data from http://iridl.ldeo.columbia.edu/SOURCES/.NOAA/.NCEP/.CPC/.CMORPH/
There you can download it, view it, do some analysis, all before downloading the results. The full 3-hourly data is a big dataset, and not available as NetCDF, but if you are only keeping part of it -- say for a certain region of the world, you should be able to download it in any format. As he indicates, you can also get links from the datalink I mention to read it directly into GRADS, Matlab, and other software packages.

I used CDOs and the following lines to transfer CMORPH biniry data to netcdf :
1. bzip2 -d
2. cdo -f nc import_binary file.ctl ofile
