In a reaction if Sodium azide is added, it forms Hydrogen azide as in contact with water or acids, we need to quench the excess of sodium azide. But we can not use sodium nitrite in that reaction.
I extract my product first before I quench the aqueous phase.
Cool down the reaction mixture to 0 deg C and slowly add water to quench the excess sodium azide.
just adding water will not destroy the sodium azide, my reaction is in water.
If you extract your product first, you can quench the aqueous phase with sodium nitrite and acid without losing your product.
