Modular building using prefabricated steel frame usually utilized thin-walled cold-formed steel section.
In high-rise building application, the steel section needs to be protected from fire for at least 2 hours.
What is the most cost effective way to protect it from fire ?
Is there any kind of material (low-cost and light-weight material) for this purpose ? Maybe a fire resistant paint, thin shotcrete, or else ?
Fire protection is one aspect there are other considerations such as seismic etc. In terms of fire protection, in the US, the vertical structural members will most likely be considered load bearing walls rather than columns. Such elements are best protected by gypsum sheathing, based on available tested assemblies. The floor and beams will be more difficult since the heat is directly below and can reach yield stress of the bottom members very quickly. It may require deeper members and rock wool insulation within the cavity along with gypsum sheathing. Both applications can be modeled by software or tested in labs for effectiveness and alternate materials.
In my opinion, based on my industry experience, if you are able to develop a cost effective system as proposed, then most likely it will be a proprietary system, and will have limited application.
