There are both physical and chemical means to make a material water-repellent. Physical means can be by blending the material in question with a hydrophobic substance. For example, inclusion of low-viscosity silicone oil into starch matrix can make the latter hydrophobic. Alternatively, chemical modification of starch leading to introduction of hydrophobic functional groups can also achieve hydrophobic quality into the material.
