How to preserve cut tree stems for later use?

I'm planning to do experiment using tree stems. The exact part in the stem that I need to preserve and be 100% functional for later use is the xylem part. The estimated preserving time would be 1 month (better if can preserve longer) and the trees I am planning to use is tropical angiosperms (Hibiscus and Mangroves). Is there any publications that you can suggest or methods that you can share for this process?

Air drying should preserve the xylem vessels, through which water will flow unimpeded. However, the tracheids may not continue to function if there is damage to the pit membrane cell walls during drying :)
