I have a sample of Al2O3 which covered by SiC in 4 cycle (The process showed in the picture). Now, I want to polish my sample to use EBSD but I can't because Silicon crystals are harder than Alumina and Alumina polish easily while always there are some dots in the surface which are Silicon particles. I used all sand papers from 50 micrometers to 1 micrometers and decreased the grade gradually but the result was not good again. What should I do?
we don't have ion polishing.I used vibration polishing 2 times, one time for 40 min and the other time for 6 hours but I didn't get result. Do you know how long should be the time of vibration polishing? I know that the time is the key factor in that.
Alumina/silicon is hard and corrosion resistant, in my view, vibration polishing should be ok. Once I used 0.06 micro colloidal silica polishing suspension to polish aluminium metrix composite materials, time less than 1 hour is ok. For vibration polishing, we should also select suitable load weight and vibrational frequency. By the way, after polishing wash your samples with plenty of water in order to prevent the silica suspension residue on the sample surface. Prior to EBSD test, we can characterize the sample by using backscattering electron imaging, if we can differentiate the microstrucrure from BSEI, it usually means that EBSD is ok.
