In the synthesis of molybdenum disulfide, the environment must be acidic (although this is not stated in most articles).
However, some articles have used the in situ method to deposit molybdenum disulfide on nickel foam. I tested this method, but the acidic environment dissolves the nickel foam.
Now the question is how to use this in situ method without dissolving nickel foam in acidic environment?
Like the following article: which put nickel foam in the synthesis of molybdenum disulfide, but the foam is not dissolved.
It goes without saying that molybdenum disulfide will not be synthesized if the environment is not acidic.
Dear Nasrin, many thanks for posting this very interesting technical question. At least in the paper which you attached to your question, there should be absolutely no problem with acid. Hydrochloric acid is employed only in the first step, i.e. the preparation of the nickel foam coated with NiCo2O4. The subsequent hydrothermal synthesis of MoS2 does not require any additional acid. Molybdenum disulfide is often prepared from sodium or ammonium molybdate and either thiourea or thioacetamide under hydrothermal conditions. You just prepare the precursor mixture, place it in the autoclave, and add a piece or several pieces of the previously prepared nickel foam coated with NiCo2O4. During the hydrothermal reaction MoS2 will be deposited on the surface of the nickel foam. There is no acid around, and the nickel foam will not dissolve.

But the problem is that if the PH of solution used to synthesize MoS2 is not less than one, this substance is not actually synthesized (I have tried this myself) and this is a point that usually Not mentioned in articles. That nickel foam does not last in an environment with this PH.
