I tried to measure the BET of highly porous polymer sponge. The surface are (SA) values seems to be too low. I added around 1g of sponge to calculate the SA. I had to add small pieces of sponge into the BET sample holder. Does the size reduction of sponge affect the SA? Has anyone performed BET on polymer sponges.
Most probably the sample possesses large pores (larger than 100 nm). As BET physisorption measures smaller pores, it gives only the surface area of the small pores. Moreover, as the sample is spongy, the pores may collapse during the test as well.
To better elucidate the fact it is necessary to know how the adsorption-desorption isotherms and BJH pore size distribution look? Is the hysteresis loop closed? Does the measurement reproducible?
