How to perform optical critical dimension (OCD) measurement on isolated structures?

Hi there,

I have noticed that in most situations, OCD measurement such as ellipsometry or reflectometry to nanoscale target are performed on periodic grating targets.

I wonder whether it is valid for isolated structures as well? or what are the limits of this kind of technique
