To measure the true hardness of a grain the plastic zone size must not exceed the size of the grain on which the indentation is made. Now, for a nano-sized grain, the indentation depth must be very shallow in order to confine the plastic zone within that particular grain (I am using nanoindentation with 3-sided pyramid Berkovich indenter). This may result in an indentation size effect. Then how to obtain the hardness efficiently?
