I am working on structural properties of Nickel Oxide (NiO). I have NiO in powder form.
It is well known that Ni exists in 2 states in NiO (Ni 2+/Ni 3+). Is there any characterization method which can help in identifying the ratio of the same.
The existence of two different oxidation states gives rise to non-stoichimetry.
Alhad Ramchandra Parashtekar , for qualitative analysis, you can do XRD, as long as your sample is (somewhat) crystalline. for quantitative analysis, you can consider XPS.

Me and my friends are going to try ICP MS by dissolving into acid. We are not very optimistic about the results. But, I will let both of you know how it goes.
