I am currently formulating a proposal on language learning. I wanted to look into field independence and dependence (FID) of ESL students. I need some insights on how to measure FID.
By constructing a personality questionnaire with an adequate number of prompts underlying each of the targeted constructs, you can gauge field dependence/independence of the selected samples considering the reliability and validity of the instrument is in tact.
Field dependence has been researched for many decades, with Within being one of the early researchers. In my own work, I've used the Group Embedded Figures Test to assess field dependence. It is a normed, standardized instrument with a high degree of reliability. Equally important, it is very easy to administer and score.
