To answer your question i would choose the thin film single crystal solar cell as a promising structure for the future of solar cells. Amorphous i layer silicon which is practically a nanoparticle structure is used to passive the surface of single crystal silicon film. Passivating the surface of silicon reduces its surface recombination velocity and consequently reduces the loss of photogenerated electron hole pairs increasing thereby the photocurrent. The p+ and n+ emitters are made by depositing doped amorphous silicon on the two faces of single crystal film supplied with the amorphous silicon i-layers. The very fine grained Si has a band gap wider than that of single crystal and therefore acts as hole and electron transport layer when doped with p-type dopant and n type dopant respectively.
The nanoparticl materials can be used also for antireflection coatings.
