You can use Pulsed Laser Deposition and in this case you dont need any solvent. The obtained films are very robust and you can control the nanoparticle size bychanging laser wavelength and/orr  fluence.

Spin coating is the simplest tool for fabrication of thin film but you cant got uniformity with high aspect. Another good tool for fabrication of uniform thin films are RF sputtering, Electron sputtering and the Langmuir Blodgett techniques.

Langmuir blodgett is the finest and excellent tool for fabrication of uniform thin film, you even could got monoatomic layer via this technique.

For controlled nano structures you can use thermal evaporation method. You can look below our recent papers on size/shape controlled nano particles/nano rods.

First of all your particles need to be stable in order to get a nice film. So just use whatever solvent your particles can be better dispersed in. I have found alcohols work quite ok for spin coating of particles of all sizes
