I am assessing the emotional responses and coping strategies of nursing students during this COVID-19 outbreak. I have used Brief-COPE for my research study. I am a lit bit confuse about the interpretation of data and how to categorize it.
Depending on your research hypothesis, you should calculate sum scores from each of the 14 coping strategies included. As far as I'm concerned, there is no way to categorise responses; also, there is no need to do so. Simply work with the 14 scores as if they were quantitative variables. That said, I must mention that, from a psychometric point of view, the Brief COPE can be a bit problematic. I strongly suggest you estimate reliability (e.g. Cronbach's alpha) on EACH of the 14 subscales separately (an overall alpha does not make any sense for the Brief COPE).
