How to integrate Foaf ontology in my project?

Once you have imported the foaf-concepts in your ontology, be critical in reusing them. Reuse implies that you do not foresee evolution, or acknowledge that your specific context of use is in some details different than assumed by foaf. Hence, make your own ontology, and make explicit relationships with foaf when appropriate only.

If your concept is identical to a foaf-concept, create an owl:sameAs relation with it (*). In this way you can use your own terminology for things, without creating a reasoning conflict or shortcoming. And you keep room for changes;

More often, though, your concept will show to be *not* exactly identical as the foaf-concept. In these matters you'll be probably looking for a subsumption relationship with the foaf-concept. By creating your own concept as more specific than the foaf-concept, you probably produce a more faithful reflection of your domain.

It happens often enough, due to your particular context of use, that your concepts are combinations of existing (foaf) concepts. It's best to explicitly specify them as such by the use of the union, or intersection of existing concepts.

These are some examples of how you best make use of existing ontologies in order to maintain its foundational reasoning capability whilst adapting it to the particular context of use, and keep control over its evolution. For the latter, assure the use of e.g. dublin core to annotate the versioning of each concept (and derive the version of the ontology)! Governance of your semantics is essential since the matter is not *if* the semantics will evolve, only *when* it will evolve.
