I just had the same problem. What worked for me, was to use a 1x1 table with no borders instead of the textbox.

You are absolutely right. I faced this challenge recently. What I think you could do is to earmark the section of the text that you wish to put in a box and then first complete your referencing as per usual. When that is done, then you can create the box and then copy and paste the earmarked text into the box. This will, therefore, mean that you must have polished your references and would not be required to return to it.

Thanks for the suggestion! But indeed this annoying if we need to make some modifications. A solution that I found (but not ideal either) is to save the word document as "Word 97-2003 Document", then right click on text box -> Format Text Box -> Text Box -> Convert to Frame. This allow to add references and comments in the text box. But this means using an old format, as this is not possible anymore in new versions of Word.
