the corona virus has very bad effect on the teaching on the universities. The most universities try to avoid the covid 19 dangerous by using the online teaching. Here we try to illustrate all the advantages and disadvantages of the online teaching
I think Universities have to engage specially the research students by sending and sharing updates to them by using any of available software to avoid the waste of their precious time and to give them a positive and healthy activity.
In a recent publication, colleagues and I explore Article An evidence-based case for quality online initial teacher education
through an evaluation of data collected about students' overall course achievement as well as assessment of their performance within work integrated learning placements. While this paper does not expand on how to increase the skill of teaching staff making the transition to online teaching within university settings, there is a range of literature that can progress your search. Perhaps start with a look at
Article Online learning in Australian higher education: Opportunitie...
to observe the perspectives of students and staff engaged in this mode of learning and teaching. Stone (2019) outlines seven key findings that reflect the views of students and teachers alike, which may be of considerable value as you think about how these priorities may inform your approach, including up-skilling teaching staff.
I agree that a great number of studies have been conducted on the advantages and disadvantages of online teaching. In my opinion, one of the most effective approaches for optimizing online learning is FLIPPED LEARNING. One of my colleagues discusses it here http://repository.uki.ac.id/935/ Since it is essentially a variant of blended learning which requires online and face to face (F2F) learning combination, while the covid 19 pandemic makes F2F impossible, an essential modification is necessary, i.e. by transforming all F2F interactions into online interactions. I think, optimizing the online discussion forum and videoconference is a good alternative to "replace" the F2F interactions.
I suggest the purely online Flipped learning implemented as follow. It starts by assigning students to self-study the lesson (reading texts, attending an online lecture, listening to an audio lecture, watching a lecture video, etc.). After that, the students are asked to exchange ideas with their appears and teacher based on their self-study experience. It is then followed by asking the student to work in small groups online to do a case study, conduct a project, etc. Finishing the group work, the students present it online to the whole class and give feedbacks one to another. Next, each student is given an assignment. Finishing it the students work in small groups again to peer-review each other's assignments.
The learning activities can be replaced with others to suit the lesson being studied, as far as they can be conducted online without any technical strains.
Although many people still consider traditional universities as the best way to achieve knowledge, online learning proves to be a great alternative. Students have the chance to study in their own time and especially for free. It represents a great way to study many fields and to boost the level of self-motivation. Online learning is so effective because students can finish their homework quickly, and there is more time left for hobbies or for finding a job.
Access to all resources of a traditional course helps participants learn wherever they are, leaving them the freedom to choose the time for study. With basically an Internet connection, a person can attend different courses. Among the advantages of online learning, there are the responsibility and self-discipline of students.
Disadvantages Of Online Learning:
Only in a small group, a person can develop properly. At school, students learn how to make friends, be patient, get rid of disappointment, and especially to compete. Competition between colleagues can be very stimulating and students will only benefit from it. Online learning cannot offer human interaction.
Another disadvantage refers to the fact that online courses cannot cope with thousands of students that try to join discussions. Also, online learning can be difficult, if it is meant for disciplines that involve practice.
In conclusion, online learning should be seen as a complement and extension of classical forms of learning. Not even the best online course can fully replace the personal contact with a teacher, or the human relationships that develop in a group. So, traditional classes shouldn’t be replaced with online learning.
You better join some free online courses offered by FUTURE LEARN and you will get good knowledge of working online. They have specially designed for this purpose.
You can also get a digital certificate once you complete the course. I have already completed this course. it is worth doing and you will learn many things from it.
Once you read this, please RECOMMEND it and also share with your colleagues, friends and your students.
Please share and RECOMMEND this as it is a very useful course.
Online teaching is already in practice in some universities. I don't think it is an effective method. But to avoid wastage of time, we should initiate this practice. In the beginning there will be problems. With the passage of time there will be some improvement.
Social functions such as sharing and commenting on content are part of the way most of us are used to communicating. Besides playing different roles between them, this makes any tournament more interactive. It also adds a lot of fun for learners as well
Giving the learners the choice of where to start on a selected set of topics and units which allow them to choose the relevant content immediately and register in the program. It can be guided along the learning path with recommendations or some mandatory units if necessary, but allow them to choose the order in which they learn by enabling and engaging the learner
Teachers cannot observe the attention of students during the online lectures. During my online lectures, I ask answers from the randomly selected students aster giving some question. This is to calrify their attenton.
To know the status of student whether he she is attentive ir not is a big problem in online classes, teachers ask questions randomly and find who is listening while who is busy in his cell phone in rest of non curicullum activities
