While I second the opinion that one needs to try to "sell" one's articles by posting them on sites that are read by many, in fact too many of the papers posted or published are quite unscientific and should really not be seen at all. :-) [This is partly the effect of the steady growth of academia, and the obvious fact that not all academicians have much of a talent to brag about.] While I would not like the existence of some screening devise - like a board of scientists deciding whether a paper is to be allowed to be posted on a website (e.g., Google scholar), I think that the community needs to sweep the floor with the most horrible and unscientific stuff that is posted and/or published. Even here on RG there are some horrendously bad papers posted.

It always beneficial for the visibility of an article that the journal where it is published is indexed in the most popular databases, especially Scopus and Web of Science. Since these databases have many users, the find ability of the article among a large number of researchers increases.

Both Web of Science and Scopus have master records with cited references, and they show the bibliographic and reference details of the citing records, thus improving the visibility of the researcher in the research community.

Visibility can be improved if you publish your article in a high impact journal. Aside that, you would have to actively promote your work by sharing it across many portals as much as possible. Make conferences FREE access to everyone. Seriously, I have to pay already in order to participate and have a paper in, and if my wife or a friend want to come in, they have to pay too! So they will have to go beyond the discriminatory elitist manner they where treated before they can go back to the curiosity they had on the first place. What if my friend is to become a researcher too? Or what if my wife has an point of view of interest from her field ? Whats the purpose of improving visibility of our research papers?

Use attractive topics and wide, after publish use social media to share your achievement.
