Commercially available non-contact IR digital pyrometers have accuracies approaching 0.4% of full scale, and repeatability approaching 0.2% of full scale. For lower temperature measurements, they can get down to +/- 0.025C How much better do you need? As a practical matter for something at 1000C if it is 996C or 1004C is probably inconsequential.
