We are working with different materials like quartz and TeO2. We get them from supplier in big cubic forms (edge length like 100mm) . Presently, the control is made by human eyes. It's a very tiring process when we have to check at different depth. We are searching for defects, bubbles, cracks etc...) which size can be submillimetric.
Do someone know a machine or else than can automitically detects the voluminous defects in such materials.
We already have one for surface but not in volume.

I would use the fact that light beams are scattered by defects.
Take a laser (a laser pointer could help for the beginning) and scan the crystal. The penetrating beam is deflected at that position where defects are present.

Ok for the physical principle but we are industry and I want to edit a defect report, if possible by an automatic way.
My researchs lead me to Schlieren (shadowgraphy) or IR digital holography but I cannot industrial products using those technologies.

That system is able to investigate samples up to 300mmx400mm.
There are other manufacturers as well...
However, I must admit, that such systems are quite expensive...
Sorry, I have just seen the TeO2 sample; for the 100mm (at density 5,67g/cm³) there is a too high x-ray attenuation. Even the voltage of 160kVp of the sytem mentioned above, will not be able to let the x-rays (nor the 'hard' ones) penetrate the sample at sufficient flux.
