Good morning.I am a graduate student in the College of Forestry, Guangxi University.I have read the article《Brittleheart as a critical feature for visual strength grading of tropical hardwood: Approach of detection》.I don’t quite understand some parts of this article. May I discuss it with you?
(1)When we characterize visible CF’s，how do we know if the CF’s are caused by brittleheart(compression failures) or Wood splitting or wind.Because I have cut some wood(very distinct,with fibre separation) to characterize CF’s,but I can’t find fibre bucking in microscope（image0012).
(2) I cut it perpendicular to the surface of the CF'S to get the longitudinal tangential section(Figure DSC08441). Is this cutting method correct?

Dear Search Illi,
why don't you try to cut a larger piece in the radial direction and polish it with sandpaper or a plane/planer machine. Most CF can be detected with the naked eye. From such CF you can take microscopic slides and get used to how they look. To my understanding brittle heart occours in the centre of larger diameter stems while wind induced CF start at the outer diameter of the stem. Your stem seems to be rather thin. So maybe its not CF. Microscopy can clarify this. Pronounced CF is very easy to recognize in microscopic slides - you cannot overlook them.

Brittle heart in wood can be detected through sawing through and through in wood (Reping). Or through understanding the physical properties of such species such as it's density, specific gravity and moisture content. Also through maceration which will expose the heart of the tree.
It effect may likely cause warping, creeping and box heart.
